The Canarian islands known as the European Hawai have the ideal conditions to practise surf during the whole year.

Water sports

The Canary Islands are under the influence of the North-East Trade Winds that blow regularly form moderate to strong. In summer, these prevailing winds get stronger, due to the Azores anticyclone. Tenerife has several Wind Surfing schools for both beginners and experienced sailors. The island guarantees good sailing winds all year round.
The different areas of the island include the famous El Médano, El Cabezo and La Jaquita beaches with incredible conditions for windsurfing. El Médano is ideal for intermediate - high level sailors, whilst the others are for board sailors with more experience. Several World Cup Grand Slam events have been held at these beaches for expression in waves, slalom and course racing events.

Wind force (Beaufort Scale) varies from 4 to 8 in La Jaquita, 4 to 7 en El Cabezo and 3 to 5 in El Médano.

Canary Island wrestling

Traditional and native Canary Island sports and games have become very popular in recent years, through federations, associations and groups. They are also supported by the Tenerife Island Cabildo (government), through its programme "Tenerife and our way of life" and the Native Sports School, with a workshop organisation carrying out promotion campaigns on the beaches of the island. Canary Island wrestling has Guanche origins and enjoys firm support from the people of Tenerife. The fixture list covers the whole year. Almost every borough has its own "terrero" or wrestling ring.
Each bout - or "brega" is between two contestants who try to unbalance each other with spectacular trips and throws. The two wrestlers have to remain on their feet, as, if any other part of the body touches the ground, that wrestler is eliminated. This is a regulated sport that is also practised in Venezuela and Cuba; a legacy of Canary Island migration.

Lucha Canaria

Canarian wrestling is the most popular of the indigenous sports in Tenerife. The wrestlers must show strength and skill in each hold they use. The winner is the wrestler that makes the opponent touch the floor first with any part of their body aside from the feet. There are many clubs and teams including a women's category that take part in different competitions that are organised throughout the year all over the island A legacy from the Guanche culture before the conquest of the island by the Spanish, Canarian wrestling has a great following of fans. The competitions are held in modern covered "terreros" (stadiums) and are often broadcast on television. Although there are individual competitions, it is mainly a team sport where skill can be more important than strength, in the words of the song by the famous Canarian folk music group the Sabandeños, the boy one, the big guy lost.
